Sonata for Solo Violoncello
This piece was commissioned by 'cellist Brigitta Gruenther. She premiered the work at The Mansion of the Strathmore arts center in 2012, while in her eighth decade. Among the most wonderful people I have known, her professional biography is so very impressive and includes relationships with von Karajan and Harnoncourt.
This is a lyrical piece. One may find interesting a technique seen here that I've used in a few pieces: the third section's telescoping of the motifs that builds momentum, propelling the work towards the final moments. Duration: 17' 30".
